The University of Charleston is an independent, co-educational residential university with a main campus in the state capital of Charleston, locations in Beckley and Martinsburg, and a growing online program. Student enrollment is approximately 2,327 representing 41 different states and 40 countries. The University offers 22 Division II sports.

The Mission of the University is to educate each student for a life of productive work, enlightened living and community involvement.
The University of Charleston offers a performance-based curriculum that is focused on specific outcomes, determined to be essential abilities every student should have for a lifetime of learning and opportunity, and reflective of what employers say they look for in their employees. The six Lifelong Learning Outcomes – critical thinking, communication, citizenship, creativity, ethical practice and inquiry – are embedded in all UC courses to help students understand and apply how coursework relates to the real world, the student and lifelong career building.

The new Russell & Martha Wehrle Innovation Center will become a catalyst for embedding innovation skills in every academic program, as well as a distinctive site for developing and launching new ideas, new methods and new products.

Undergraduate degree programs are available in business, health sciences and arts and sciences. Masters programs are available in business, forensic accounting, strategic leadership and physician assistant, and UC offers doctorate degrees in pharmacy and executive leadership. Online courses include both undergraduate and graduate level programs.
